The newsletter of the North
American Earth Liberation
Prisoners Support Network
April/May 2001
WHY PRI T ?
It’s no exaggeration at this point to say that our planet is in the
midst of a serious ecological crisis. All over the globe, every
day, the omnicidal plague of industrial civilization continues to
spread, driven by economic greed and an insatiable, constantly
accelerating demand for energy and resources. And as this
cancerous MegaMachine blindly pursues its “scorched Earth
policy”, entire species are going extinct and entire societies are
disappearing ,and it's all happening so quickly that there
hardly seems time to react.
Yet react we must, assertively and immediately, before the
biosphere is poisoned and fouled beyond repair and while we
still have something worth fighting for. It is in response to the
severity of the global environmental crisis that more and more
people are starting to step outside the system of Man-made
laws and take “{llegal” direct action in defense of the Earth. Of
course, in this context, legal and illegal are meaningless terms;
if we accept that certain strategies ( like economic sabotage )
are necessary to put the brakes on the industrial death
machine, then we have to be prepared to support those
individuals who are risking their lives and freedom to carry out
these acts.
What we are starting to see is the emergence of a truly
radical, decentralized ,international environmental movement
and an integral part of building such a movement is going to
be the creation of a solid, well-organized prisoner support
network. Our movement will not continue to grow unless we
are able to provide this level of support to our comrades who
are unfortunate enough to become prisoners of the State.
Regardless of what one may think of the I.R.A. and their
nationalistic independence struggle, it's clear that they've done
a phenomenally good job taking care of their P.O.W.’s and
that’s one of the main reasons their movement has been so
hard to defeat.
It’s also one of the main things that makes the Irish
independence struggle a real struggle, and that separates it
from other less-organized movements. We have to start
viewing prisoner support work as a revolutionary act and as
an indispensable part of any real revolutionary struggle or else
the State will crush us while our movement is still in it'’s
.embryonic stages and we will lose the momentum we now
have. The purpose of this newsletter is to spread the word
about certain individuals who have acted in defense of the
Earth and our collective future and who have fallen victim to
state repression. We will not allow these comrades to be
forgotten about and we will do everything in our power to
bring attention to their situation. But beyond publicizing their
plight, we want to build up a reliable and consistent support
network for them, both to honor their heroic acts and to send a
clear message to the State that we are organized enough to take
care of our own.
If there is one thing we ask of anyone who comes into
contact with this newsletter ,it's that you take the time to write
some of these prisoners, not just once but regularly, because
in the final analysis this is the best support we can provide
them with. We also need to actively counter the States
propaganda and their attempts to portray these individuals as
“terrorists”. The terrorists are those who wage war in pursuit of
political power and economic gain and who build prisons to
house the ever growing number of people who choose to speak
out against this insanity.
This newsletter is free to all prisoners and 3 stamps to
everyone else. We can also send a flat, master copy so that you
can make your own copies. Please contact us if you want
‘multiple copies, a review copy or have any graphics to donate
for future issues. The newsletter will come out every two
‘months so the next issue will (roughly) be June/July 2001. As
always, we are always looking for donations of stamps or cash,
suggestions for sympathetic lawyers and feedback.
We will have a comprehensive list of prisoner support groups
in the US as well as a listing of zines that are free to prisoners
available shortly.

Court and Legal Updates
Long Island ELF
In February, four young men from Long Island were
charged with arsons and monkeywrenching committed by
the Earth Liberation Front. From what we can tell,
George Mashkow III, age 17, was picked up and
questioned by the FBI because he was overheard bragging
to friends at his school. Mashkow proceeded to snitch
and implicate three others: Jared McIntyre, the 17 year
old son of a NYC cop, Matthew Rammelkamp (age 16) and
Connor Cash, (age 19).
Jared and Matthew were also brought before the grand
Jury but did not answer questions, nor implicate anyone
else. However, both have plead guilty to the arson
count and are facing restitution of $365,000.Conner is
pleading not guilty and is out on bail. He will surely
need loads of support as the state has made it clear
that they are seeking to make an example of him. We are
currently supporting Connor in his not guilty plea. For
more information contact freeconnorcash@yahoo.com
Interesting to note is Mashkow's snitching which did
nothing but hurt himself, his codefendants and the
movement at large. We can say now what we said when
Justin Samuel snitched on co-defendant Peter Young a
few months back: If you are not ready to deal with the
consequences of state repression and imprisonment than
maybe you shouldn’t commit acts of economic sabotage.
Jeremiah Rush Bowen
On June 21, 2000 Jeremiah and Jennifer Howard were
arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a town house
in Boulder, Colorado.
Jennifer was able to be bailed out soon after that but
Jeremiah was stuck in various county jails for the last
eight months awaiting trial. Faced with a 4-16 year
sentence he pled to lesser charges and got a two year
sentence. There is a possibility that he may be charged
with federal charges and he has requested that people
not speculate on his motivation behind the arson. As of
right now, not many people know of his situation and he
is in need of support. His address can be found in the
Ecodefense prisoner listings.
Frank Ambrose
Environmental activist Frank Ambrose was arrested and
charged with tree spiking in relation to an ELF action
that took place in the Morgan Monroe State Forest in
Indiana. His pre-trial is on April 6 and there will be
protests at Federal buildings around the country that
day in solidarity with him. We also recommend calling
the court at 812-349-2534 and telling them to drop the
charges against Frank.
Matt Whyte and Peter Schnell
Activists Matt Whyte and Peter Schnell were arrested in
Santa Cruz January 23rd for the alleged possession of
materials that could be made into "destructive devices.
The materials the arresting officers concede the
charges are based on are nothing more than a can of
gas, some gallon jugs, and birthday candles. In
addition to citing their allagad possession of a can of
gas, water jugs, and birthday candles the police report
actually includes photos of the other "evidence" found
in the young men's car. Amongst the more interesting
items seized and photographed are a wrapper from a
Tropical Source chocolate bar, a flyer to an upcoming
forum on the prison industrial complex, and a map of
santa Cruz. Originally, the bail was set for $250,000
but after a few weeks, both activists were able to be
bailed out despite the prosecutor’s objections. Federal
charges have been filed against them and they are
currently under house arrest and Peter has an
electronic collar on him. For more information, contact
sc2fundehotmail.com
Josh Harper
Josh Harpers criminal contempt charges were dropped
because he agreed to appear before a federal grand Jury
(under threat of imprisonment if he missed this court
appearance) but once there Josh failed to answer any of
their questions. However, despite Josh’s failure to
assist the grand jury it looks like he won't be jailed
for contempt of court. Now that his criminal contempt
charges have been dropped, fellow activists Craig
Rosebraugh and Elaine Close will not be pressured by
the State to testify against their friend in court. For
more information on what sort of questions the Portland
grand jury asked Josh, read our Grand Jury section
later in the newsletter.
Andy Stepanian
Andy was released from prison last month!
Jeremy Parkin
Citing a lack of evidence, a 3rd District judge has
dismissed charges against Jeremy who was accused of
releasing mink two years ago from a Salt Lake County
fur farn. He spent 14 days in the Salt Lake County Jail
until his parents could raise the $100,000 bail to
release hin in December.

With tears in his eyes
he looks at the ravaged land
knowing from where came the lies
in rightness he uses his hands
to attack the steel enemy
a machine of misguided man
and though his foes are many
these machines does he damn
Many times does he fight
ripping wires with his hands
knowing he is right
to protect the sacred land
for he is a child
of sacred Mother Earth

I also have omitted the lectures and statements of any
Jurors and the prosecutor. (By the way, the prosecutor
earlier in the day had yelled, "Stop playing games
with me Mr. Harper! If you want to keep saying, 'I
don't recall' I will just leave the room and try and
get any sentence I can on the criminal contempt
charge.” I thought it was pretty funny.)

Frank Ambrose Statement
January 25, 2001,
Today I was arrested for allegedly spiking trees that
were scheduled to be logged in our publicly-owned State
Forests. First, I want to assure people of my
innocence. I have not committed the act that the
Indiana Conservation Officers and the FBI are accusing
me of, nor do I know who did. I am only guilty of being
outspoken about the issue of logging on our public
lands. I am committed to the protection of these
treasures. Although I have publicly supported groups
that have at times engaged in clandestine campaigns, I
do not myself participate in property destruction. I
believe in and am committed to non-violent direct
action and civil disobedience as has been practiced for
years by the civil rights, peace, labor, and
environmental movements.
This country’s police agencies have made my arrest a
media spectacle, as they have been trying to catch
someone from the Earth Liberation Front. In their zeal
to catch someone, anyone, they have conveniently
forgotten about civil rights. They have used a number
of underhanded tactics to destroy any support I may
have as an activist and citizen in this community. The
police had raided our house in July looking for
implements of tree spiking, and came away with family
Pphoto albuns, address books, and organizational files
about the groups my wife and I have worked with in the
past. Conservation officers have also called upon
charity organizations that have helped me and my family
out in times of need and told them I was a terrorist,”
even though I have not been convicted of any crime and
deny this allegation.
I am sure they will continue to label me a “terrorist”
in their media spectacle, even though there has been no
trial and I have not been convicted of anything. I urge
the media to consider what they are printing and how
they label me and others. Remember, even though the FBI
calls what the ELF does “terrorism,” it does not mean
that it is terrorism. The ELF has widely publicized
guidelines that preclude any actions that endanger
life, human or otherwise. Terrorism is random, bombs
exploding in crowded shopping plazas and actions of
that nature.
Terrorism seeks to frighten and demoralize
by causing harm or even death. I do not engage in these
kinds of actions and do not belong to any terrorist
organizations. I have always been a peaceful activist
and have attempted to change governmental policies
through peaceful means..

contact section).
Hate crime legislation : the State's latest
attempt to silence dissent
In Oregon, senator Gary George s Introducing a bill into the
Oregon legislature that would expand the definition of “hate
crimes” in a direction that would benefit the cause of state
repression: he wants to include the actions of so-called “eco-
terrorists” and critics of capitalism. The bill calls for an
additional five years In prison for someone whose crime was
motivated by “ a hatred of people who subscribe to a set of
political beliefs that support capitalism and the needs of
people with respect to their balance with nature”.
In his lame attempts to justify this Bill to the larger public,
Gary George has stated, “ The fact is, we punish people for
what they are thinking. We do that already”. This Is quite a
revealing Faux Pas and essentially confirms what many of us
suspected about “Hate crimes” legislation from the beginning
; That it's real purpose is to target political dissidents. This
latest Blll is just part of the States ongoing attempts to portray
revolutionaries as “terrorists” and to increase their ability to
put revolutionaries away for a fong time.
It's abundantly clear what movements Senator Gary
George would like to crush with this legislation and it's
important that anyone even remotely connected with Earth
liberation or Anti- capitalist struggles pay attention to this
latest move on the part of the State to neutralize dissent. And
if there are any doubts at all about how the State intends to
utilize these laws, we need only look at the recent case of
Native American activist James Cosner , who Is being held on
$ 50,000 ball in the Santa Clara County Jail for publicly
‘smashing a statue of Christopher Columbus on Thursday,
March 8" at the San Jose City Hall. He is being charged with
destruction of a civic monument and making terrorist threats
under federal hate crimes legislation, presumably for yelling
out “Genocide” and “This man murdered us!” while he
'smashed away at the statue of Columbus with a
sledgehammer.
A Bill similar to the Oregon one Is also being proposed in
Washington state:
WA HOUSE BILL 1938
An act relating to sabotage resulting in damage to
land, facilities, and property. Sponsored by
Representatives Pearson, Sump, Doumit, Jackley,
Pennington, Mulliken, Boldt, Schoesler and Buck House
bill 1938 establishes new penalties for damages done
by terrorist activities against certain industries
including timber and mining companies, fur farms,
recreational, residential, commercial, and industrial
development, ‘university research facilities, and
animal and biotechnology research laboratories.
"We've seen an increase of attacks against facilities
in Western states, including Washington, by groups
that have an agenda and claim responsibility,” said
the bill's prime sponsor, Rep. Kirk Pearson, R-Honroe.
"They've not only created quite a bit of destruction,
but they've also put a lot of people in danger. My
greatest fear is if we don't do something to stop
this, it will continue to get worse and lives may be
lost.” Under the bill, anyone who enters another's
property and damages, destroys or causes injury to
land or personal property would be liable.
Pearson cited a recent attack on Pacific Logging's
Marblemount operations in which someone put sand in
the engines and hydraulic tanks and rice in the
radiators of equipment, causing more than $100,000 in
damage. Leslie James Pickering, a spokesman for the
Earth Liberation Front, said bills like this have been
proposed in other states and don't deter economic
saboteurs.
It’s important for all of us involved in the radical
ecological resistance movement to keep each other
informed on recent developments in “ Hate Crime”
legislation. Species Traitor

MAKE A DAL
Grand Jury In Phoenix O e
\ federal grand jury has formed in Phoenix, Arizona to
investigate over ten arsons claimed by the “Coalition
Save the Preserves” in the last year. Journalist
James Hibberd just won a court case that prevented the
FBI and law enforcement agencies from seizing
audiotapes made of a phone message left by a
representative of the elusive “CSP”. Hibberd
interviewed the masked CSP member in a public park two
months ago and it seems that everyone that was in the
park at the time is being questioned (including the
band that was playing!) At present time, it seems that
the feds are stifled in their attempts to solve the
and intimidate people into speaking before a
grand jury.

Tips for writing to prisoners
As tesistance (o capialism and government escaltes, the number of people in-
volved in the struggle that will be abducted, kidnapped, beaten, framed, jailed and most likely
‘murdered by the authorites will also ise. Because they are contained behind prison walls
does not mean they should be forgotten or counted out-of-commission. ILis imperative 10
support them i theic isolation and their continued strggles on the inside.
Most simply sated, jai can be lonely and it helps o know others are thinking about
you._Itcan also help thit ituation by authorities knowing that people are watching and
aware.
i can be intimidating writing a prisoner for the first time. This pamphlet s just
guide (0 help those interested in supporting intemees, but there is no formal set of rules. Pris-
ons” regulations vary and prisoners’ needs and desires are vast and differing.
* First, abandon and forget all th stereotypes and preconceived notions you
may have of people in jail
A+ You may want 1o use a PO Box. This creates aconsistent mailing address
(i case of traveling or moving) and prevents your home address from
being hand delivered to the authoritcs.
* Some prisons will not accept mail without a retun address or some sort of
a last name 50 be sur (0 include them on the cavelope.
» Dateall correspondence. Mail tampering and delays do happen. Write
your returm address on the letter because sometimes eavelopes are dis-
carded before the mail i given (0 the inmate.
* Listenclosures on cnvelope. You should assume all mail is monitored so
liting enclosed items may help get them through quicker, help in their
being retumed (o you if denicd or assis the prisoner in Ligation for mail
censorship if they choose to pursue the issue.
'* Use standard paper and envelopes. As your relaionship develops you can
experiment with envelope art or fancy paper if you wish, but for sarters,
don't give the authorites any reason (0 eject the mail.
+ Agin. assume all correspondence is monitored. Do notsay anything
‘compromising your safety or, more importantly, the safety of the inmate.
‘Guards may take reribution for what you write out o the prisoner—
mentally and/or physically.
Do not draw symbols that may improperlybe consirued as “gang relted.”
This i particularly teve of anarchy symbols since more and more fre-
quently anarchists and their syipathizers ar being labeled as gang mem-
bers and as a “security threat group” (STG), which can lead (o greater
isolation, brutality and placement in white supremacy units where their
lives would be endangered.
« Askifthey can receive stamps or envelopes and what the restrictions are
for mailing those supplics nto the prison Inmates may receive an abun.
dance of mail and/or lack sufficient funds or stamps o reply to everyone.
Be patient and if th prisoner can receive mail supplics, send them when
able. Be sure to find out the proper procedure first a the ules can
change drastically between prisons.
1f wrding a complete stranger s difficult at frst, don't worry. It gets eas-
fer the more you do it and as a reltionship develops
