Welcome to the September/October 2001 Spirit of
Freedom, our third newsletter since the network’s
inception. It would be an understatement to say that
recent events in Washington and New York have had
quite an impact on our activities as prisoner supporters.
It seems that it is impossible to avoid the US governments
propaganda it is creating to justify its new war. What is
not talked about in the corporate media or on the streets
is the impact that the government’s propaganda will have
on the fledging Earth liberation and anarchist
movements. Already the FBI and other agencies are
talking about increased ~surveillance, implementing
CARNIVORE to read email and petitioning judges to make
wire tapping easier. No doubt, the government will use
the hijackings as an excuse to crack down on the Earth
libcration movement and thosc who support political
prisoners. We mustn't shriek away from supporting the
people who put their lives on the line to protect the Earth
and its animals. On a different note, we are currently
trying to determine whether So# will continue to be a bi-
monthly newsletter or a quarterly. Any feedback or
financial assistance would be appreciated.

FRANK AMBROSE  COURT AND LEGAL UPDATES

From a September 13th article in the /ndiana
Herald-Times, it appears that charges against Frank
Ambrose have been dropped. However, as of the printing
of this newsletter, that has not been confirmed by
Frank himself. He was charged in January with spiking
trees in the Morgan Monroe State Forest in June 2000.
This action was claimed by the Earth Liberation Front
(ELF) and local and federal authorities were bragging
about cracking their first ELF case. Cops raided

Frank's house and seized tools, gloves and other items
in July 2000 and sent them to an FBI lab for analysis.
His trial was postponed months ago after solidarity
demonstrations were called for at federal buildings.

The Morgan-Monroe tree-spiking was one of several
local acts last year for which the Earth Liberation

Front claimed responsibility. Others included an arson
of a luxury house, a tree spiking in Yellowwood

NEW JERSEY GRAND JURY

Josh Harper has once again received a subpoena from a
federal grand jury, this time in East Millstone, New Jersey.
The government demanded that Josh release footage

from his most recent video, 7%is Means War"which
apparently contains images of an ALF liberation of 14
beagle puppies from Huntington Life Sciences (HLS)

last spring. According to Josh “I was put into a room

with at least a dozen guards. I had a brief argument

with the assistant prosecutor, and was told that they

were going to have a contempt hearing. I was sure that

1 was going to jail, so I asked if I could use a

bathroom real quick. Anyhow, I stepped out of the

room expecting to be taken before a judge for refusing

to hand over the video or answer questions, and was
instead told that I was being let go. Go figure. I

haven't been re-subpoenaed”.

FREE PUT IN SOLITARY
Jeffrey "Free" Luers was sent to solitary confinement

last month for 42 days resulting from an incident in

which he was jumped by two people. His nose was broken

in the fight. Free was fined $50 and sentenced to 14 days
loss of privileges (no yard, no phone access, no visits) to
begin after his 42 days in the hole. He will not be able to
make a phone call until October 7th! While he is in the
hole, he is unable to receive any publications, books,
magazines, anything other than léfters, ~ ™ "™

NEBRASKA ARRESTS

'We are attempting to find out information about the
alleged arrest of three ELF members in Nebraska in

late July. The only source we have is an article in

the Omaha World Herald stating that three young men
were charged with multiple counts of fourth class felony
criminal mischief. They are accused of sabotaging four golf
courses in the Omaha area. According to the article,

they have claimed to be ELF members. Any information

or leads on this case would be appreciated

ELF PRESS OFFICERS STEP DOWN

Both Craig Rosebraugh and Leslie James Pickering have
stepped down from their duties as press officers for

the North American Earth Liberation Front. Both have
stated that they that if the Earth Liberation Front is

to be a viable movement, public concentrations of
support must not be centered on one o two people. The
two have maintained that the ELF is one of the greatest
demonstrations of the power the people can have if they so
desire to take it. They sincerely wish to express their
gratitude to all those who have expressed some form of
support over the years and to the courageous individuals
that have been involved in ELF actions.

CONGRESSIONAL SUBCOMMITTEE SEEKS TO
SUBPOENA CRAIG ROSEBRAUGH

The House Subcommittee on Forest and Forest Health has
scheduled an October 16 hearing to explore the
increasing numbers of eco-terrorist acts on "national
forest" lands. Resource Chair James Hansen seeks to
force Craig Rosebraugh, former press officer for the

Earth Liberation Front (ELF) to testify. Craig has

declined an invitation to appear voluntarily .

NO FRIENDS OF OURS

In their quest for more money and lawsuits, the
Southern Poverty Law Center. has turned their attention to
the Earth Liberation Front. Despite the lack of any racist
ideology, the SPLC is attempting to draw comparisons
between white supremacists and the ELF.

In a report entitled *By Any Necessary Means.” (located at

http://www.splcenter.org. The SPLC makes these idiotic

statements: .

“When it comes to the current economic and political
system, the two groups (ELF and fascists) increasingly find
themselves on the same side.”

The shadowy ELF makes much of the radical right look
rather meek. "

Right-wing extremists like the look of those involved in eco-
and animal rights terrorism.”

Than they close with the obvious which raises the
question, Just what is the SPLC’s motives?

it seems clear that the ELF doesn't share their racist views
or have other connections to their groups.”

LETTER FROM FREE

To;my supporters:

1 guess first off I want to say thank you to all those
people who have written me, supported me, or donated .
time or money to my defense. You have made this
situation bearable. I cannot thank you enough. My heart
especially goes out to those who have continued to fight,
and have risked their own freedom, struggling against this
destructive and oppressive system.

I have been able to adjust to prison life. I can tell you
that it is a whole new experience. That puts it politely.

1do not know how long I will remain here, as of
now I have 21 more years to go. It is my plan/goal to
remain as active in the struggle for all life and against all
forms of oppression as I can. By necessity I must use new
tactics that can be employed from here.

1 hope to complete a degree in sociology while I'm here.
And to write and inspire with words. Already I have
received many requests for interviews. I can only do the
best I can to try to awaken people, raise awareness, and
lend strength to those still on the front lines.

To all of you who try to bring change, in whatever form
or tactic you use... whether you fight for the planet or
against sexism, whether you are trying to raise minimum
wage and create better work conditions or helping to
create alternatives to traditional work: Our struggle comes
in many forms. We fight different battles, in _different
fields. We use different tactics and different skills. We
share different beliefs and different ideologies. Yet, we
have one thing in common: we need each other, we need
to stand side by side, to work and fight together. Only
together can we create a world that we can all live in

happily, healthfully, safely, and sustainably.
My goal in life is to help create that world. While I plan
on_continuing that goal, right now I need to focus on
getting out of prison. My appeal will be underway shortly.
T expect it will be a lengthy process. I'm asking for your
continued support through these rough times.

MORE FASCIST LEGISLATION

(yes, we know that’s redundant)

Congress pigs cunningham (R-CA) and two house
pigs, Chambliss (R-GA) and Nethercutt, Jr. (R-WA),
introduced a bill to protect US researchers and farmers
from animal liberationists who destroy property The Agro-
Terrorism Act of 2001 will increase protection currently
extended to plant research facilities to include animal
research facilities and give the FBI new tools to pursue
criminal conspiracies against animal and plant terrorism”.
This bill will also increase penalties for Animal Terrorism
and establish the National Animal Terrorism and
ecoterrorism Clearinghouse at the FBI to help law
enforcement agencies gather and exchange information on
animal and ecoterrorists nationwide.

Oregon
Congress-person Hooley (OR) has proposed legislation
that would provide additional local resources (financial
and personnel), create an information clearinghouse and
make Hooley seem like she is doing something to stem the
rising tide of Earth liberation activities in her voting area
(Monmouth, Oregon-site of the Christmas 1999 burning of
Boise Cascade by the ELF). Hooley also sent a letter to gw.
bush and attorney general ashcroft urging them to send
additional federal agents to Oregon.

LETTER FROM PRISONER HELEN WOODSON

Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Those who
originate and use new science and technology intend
beneficial results. Nuclear power, pesticides, cloning and
genetic alteration are sincerely seen as worthwhile
advances, their potential harm as acceptable risk. And
this was undoubtedly true when Congress passed Public
Law 106-546

Public Law 106-546: DNA Analysis Backlog Elimination
Act of 2000 mandates the taking of blood from certain
federal prisoners, the samples to be sent to the FBI

for DNA profiling, the left over blood to be permanently
archived by the FBI. Procedures for implementation have
just been drawn up, and prison medical departments are
preparing the individual kits. Inmates who refuse will be
restrained and the blood drawn forcibly, and they may be
subject to sanctions and criminal charges as well.
Carswell officials say that only a "minute percentage" of
women are affected, and I am to be the first here.

At first glance, the law is not a bad idea. DNA profiling
may lead to the closing of previously unsolved cases and
will aid in the apprehension of recidivists in the future.
Since I do not attempt to hide my identity, this will have
no effect on my actions after my eventual release.
However, everyone who reads the news knows of FBI

carelessness and malfeasance. There will be mistakes,
there will be deliberate incrimination of the innocent, and
experts will lie in court. But it is the potential abuse in
other areas that concerns me.

Psychologists have long theorized about the genetic origins
of anti-social behavior, and some educators have
expressed an interest in identifying at risk children. This
and similar state laws will create the largest DNA data
bank in existence, and sooner or later studies will be
made. What if some criminals have identifiable genetic
markers, and what if their children do too, and what if
they exist in the general population also, maybe in your
children and grand children? Doesn't society have the
right to know only, of course, so that appropriate
intervention measures can be taken?

Orwellian? I think not, and I predict that within 10 years
the voluntary testing of children will be common and
within 20 years mandatory. Newborns will leave the
hospital with their own DNA on file just as they now leave
with their Social Security numbers.

Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Many law
enforcement personnel have only the best of intentions,
the kind that the road to hell is paved with . A police state
is characterized by 'repressive governmental control of
political, economic and social life..." At what point does
that apply to the United States, and at what point will
ordinary citizens decide to do something about it? Our
children and grandchildren will want to know.

PRISONER PROFILE

Garfield Marcus Gabbard (age 37) is a Green Anarchist
political prisoner held against his will at HMP Camp Hill
Gulag in England. He is serving 18 months imprisonment
after attending the November 30th 1999 'Anti Capitalist
Demo' in London and setting fire to a Babylon van at
Euston after the police attacked young demonstrators.
Garfield was caught because a fluffy unmasked him and a
police informer identified him.

Garfield has been active in the Animal/Earth Liberation
movement since 1976. He is a staunch Animal
Liberationist, Deep Ecologist who is involved with
Community Justice. Garfield has also been involved with
the squatters movement, hunt sabbing, trade Union fight
back, Anti Fascist Action, etc. Garfield very much sees
direct action from the grass roots as the way forward. He
is a vegan who is persecuted for who is by the
automatons. He is an eco-anarchist and proud of it.
Garfield welcomes all letters and would very much like

to hear from you. Also, Garfield has asked, if possible,
can people please spare a little money to help him and his
fiancé whilst he is inside. It would help take the pressure
off his fiancé who is not only financially supporting

WRITINGS BY PRISONER JEREMIAH RUSH BOWEN

Okay, so my unwanted fifteen minutes in the Colorado
papers have taught me (as if I needed the lesson) that
print media is almost exclusively distortions, packed

lies too tight for even subjective bias to enter; the spin
could be called objective, even though not factual due to
the diffuseness of its origin. Wholies? ‘They lie; the
impersonal institution of mediatizing reportage lies: all
more or less meaningless because there is no who there.
Impersonal: the cages are certainly physical but hardly
human: a careerist cedes her humanity tot he career. Or
more specifically, to the physical apparatus of that career-
the cubical, the office tower, the highway, the subway, the
automobile, the microscope, the uniform or apron, the
screen the screen the screening and to the network (cage)
of power relations that govern and specifics each action. It
is people who are destroying the real world by covering it
with exploitation and artifice, but they are people in their
“official capacities": people who have lost the human to an
impersonal architectoinic identity. This for me is where
the struggle begins and ends: it is not people I fight; not
the who but the what that has capitated from within and
without.

1 was invited to write something about "what we want".
Meaning of course (Because | wouldn't presume to speak
for anyone else without their input) what do I want in

the context of an international movement toward (I
hope) revolution and restoration. It's an interesting

subject, partly because I would like to see a radical
liberation of desire, which seems incompatible with a
definition of such, but also because | want nothing
new. I don't want to build a "new world" (thought the
world I want would of course be something different
than heretofore experienced by humans-difference as
temporality and spacing).What I desire is already
present, metaphorically and actually just beneath
world as it is ("Underneath the pavement, it's the
beachl), showing through in spots but (increasingly)
rarely untainted by the overlay of civilized
superficiality. All that is truly necessary is that we
clear away enough space for real life to reemerge.

So are the papers right? Am I a 'terrorist'? Webster
defines terrorism as "the political use of terror

and intimidation”. But I have no desire to intimidate
anyone. If circumstances make us as much as we make
circumstances, if our cages are not merely ideological
or psychological, but physical, then liberation

requires a physical response to physical enslavement.

I don't want to change people; I want to open up
situations, make space for new possibilities (or the
return of forgotten ones).

A Eugene Anarchist pamphlet from 1999 included the
phrase "institutions could be removed, but their imprint
must also be removed from our minds". Obviously, an
imprint cannot be removed as long as the imprinter is
still exerting pressure on the imprinted. Civilization
must be destroyed physically before it can fade and
disappear psychologically and ideologically. Trying

to free one's mind in a sea of subjugation is like

trying to dry your pants in an aquarium.

So what do I want? Complete reintegration with the
land. An existence undifferentiated but infinitely

different. The "untouched' in which every touch

touches itself, in which diversity=health, in which
economy and extravagance coexist without contradiction.
The ideal is real life; we look for analogies, human
societies that mirror the circle. Hence the reexamination
(and to a certain extent) emulation of the primitive.

At the center of all that I find revolting and
deserving of revolt is mediation; this most of all T

see as definitive of the artificial. Civilization it

what comes between. The measure of authoritarianism
is our distance from our own power (human being
defines as rich, white and male) is product and
function of mediation; as s the constant construction
of newer, more sterile cages, the subjection of touchy
by image. If asked, I would posit this as the driving V1
force, the common denominator in those fighting for
liberation: the experience of and desire for a
direct life, unmediated living.

But it unnerves me to try to describe this ineffable
core because I perceive it only obliquely, or in
flashes of spontaneous involvement. It is the center
of what most would call my ‘spiritual’ life but its
spiritual power lies in its overwhelming physical
authenticity. It is a physical reality that subtends
the floating images of modern life; it is a circular
stream fed by its own spring that flows beneath the
streets of every city.

But is also the very empirical creek cutting through
sandstone and cattails just beyond the barbed wire
outside my window. It is my sunburned cheeks, my hands
raw from the shovel handle. I'm sometimes surprised to
find that reality infects my actions with an

unreasonable cheerfulness. Sometimes the sound of
rocks popping off rocks striking the rock pile strikes

me like marimba rhythms because they are siblings

making their own sounds without regard for uniforms or
penalty.

I can't speak for anyone else's aims, but what I want
is to dance to those rhythms as concrete falls before
the advancing wilds.

police informant, Anja Hermans, as an accomplice after
she named him as an ALF activist and tipped off the police

Stanaiug Doer (Robert Wilson) was
reloased from prison after serving
25 years!
Linn (Lenny) Chavez, c/o SAIIC PO Box 28703, Oakland
CA 94694; saiic@igc.apc.org. A 36 year old AIM activist
and Kiowa man, Lenny was cutting wood at his home
when he was attacked by a right wing Aryan group
member. The man grabbed Lenny's chainsaw threatening
him and all those in the property. Fearing for his and his
family's life Lenny drew his penknife and inflicted non-
lethal injuries to the attacker. While the other man went
free, Lenny was charged with attempted murder.
MOVE
MOVE, an eco-revolutionary group, were consistently
persecuted by the Philadelphia police during the '70s
culminating in the police firebombing of their commune
in 1985. The 'Move 9' were framed for the murder of
a cop and sentenced to the maximum prison sentence of
100 years each. In '98 Merle Africa died in very
suspicious circumstances in prison. The pamphlet 20
years on the MOVE is an comprehensive account of this
story.

NIKOS MAZIOTIS RELEASED!

According to comrades from the Anarchist Bulletin For
Counter-Information and Action in Greece, anarchist Nikos
Maziotis, was finally released in mid August, after
spending 3.5 years in prison.

Jeff ‘Free' Luers was moved on September 18 to Oregon
State Penitentiary in Salem from Two Rivers Correctional
Institution. His co-defendant Craig ‘Critter' Marshall was
moved to Pendleton (Eastern Oregon Correctional
Institution) two weeks ago. Free’s supporters say: s this
game of Musical Prisons’ being played to keep them from
receiving consistent mail and visits, to confuse their
supporters, to keep them from accomplishing their minimal
goals, to stop them from making friends, or to test them out

ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST JAILED IN CHILE

On August 30, Carlos Riveros, a 22 year old animal rights
activist, was arrested and accused of putting a bomb at the
“Health Service” of the city of Valparaiso. A recording sent
to a newspaper claimed responsibility for that direct
action, as well as another that took place the same night
apparently in protest of the city’s killing of 100 dogs.

On August 30, his house was searched by detectives who
destroyed many of his things, confiscated literature,
banners, pamphlets and what they said to be material to
build explosives. The charges he is facing are still unclear,
but yesterday he was sent to a jury where they notified him
that he will be processed by an anti-terrorism law. 5
Carlos was released shortly afterwards but under
“libertad vigiladd (freedom under surveillance). Money is
needed to hire a lawyer to represent him. Donations can

DESTROYING BARRIERS

The moment we are brought into this world our rulers- to
ensure the present order continues- quickly begin to
impose many fears and phobias, morality, religion,
language, time, number, art, etc. on our consciousness
under the guise of culture. To do so, they hope to divide
us within, placing invisible barriers on our emotions, our
feral ness, to control how we act and what we say through
the use of order and social fear. Destroying barriers is to
dismantle all such authority imposed on us by
Leviathan. When we attack such limitations
psychologically imposed on us, we begin to feel more
alive, a hint of what it is to live fully, to live in wild,
creative, undomesticated freedom. It is this freedom in
which some of us wish to gain, and to do so requires the
destruction of the enemy of the wild- the present system.
Within this context I have listed those who refused to live
their lives as machines, who forged beyond such barriers
attacking more fiercely the order of the present system; as
such I extend my solidarity. The state may attempt to
punish the few who challenge the order, who dare
attempt to take back their humanity; but for those of us
who want to live free- insurrection is spontaneous, it is
wild! and for this very reason those who attempt such
control and  domestication, who expect the expected will
ultimately fail to destroy us. Long live life and love,
passion and anger!
